Protein is the construction material (the building blocks) for our bodies. Our body structure is made from protein, this includes our bones, skin, hair, nails, connective tissue and of course our muscles. Protein is only second to water within the body. So as a body builder it’s extremely important we find good sources of protein. As the saying goes, You are what you eat.
So why do body builders and other athletes need additional protein?
Exercise breaks down our muscle tissue. When our body repairs this muscle it grows back stronger. The body utilises the protein we consume to rebuild this muscle. Not enough protein and the muscle can’t be repaired as efficiently as it could be. So to get the maximum results from exercise we need to supplement our diet with rich and quality sources of protein.
It’s important that we don’t consume extra amounts of fats when we are looking for additional sources of protein. This is why body builders tend to look for pure protein sources. The two most common protein sources are protein powders and egg whites. Most body builders look to egg whites because they are versatile and can be used in many different types of recipes. Gone are the days when you used to just have to consume them in their raw state. Protein powders are another good source but they are limited to being consumed as just a protein shake. This eventually becomes monotonous, so most body builders choose egg whites over powders.
When it comes to egg whites you have two options. One, buy eggs and separate the egg yolk from the white. The egg white has zero fat content. This is often messy so a better option is to buy your egg white in a carton. Liquid egg white can then be consumed as is or in a number of food and drink recipes. You can now also buy liquid egg whites from your local supermarket.
So whether you prefer shakes to whites or a combination of both, with both being readily available in shops you have no excuse not to consume enough protein.
